SPANNUM, NETHERLANDS

FELTING WORKSHOP

with Claudy Jongstra

14 °C NW 16 KM/H

The felting wool is from local sheep, which we carded by hand at the workshop, mixing spun and woven pieces to make our own unique compositions.

During our visit to Spannum we participated in a felting workshop. After learning about the Burgundian Black dye, and seeing the recipe come to life, we were able to use the dye ourselves.

ANGUS FELTING WOOL BY HAND

We laid out a composition in thick woolen layers, felted a backing with merino wool, and then mended the wool fibers together with nothing but friction and warm, soapy water. As digital designers, we found it a surprisingly satisfying, analogue experience.

During our visit we met several students, apprentices, and visitors from all over the world; our own professors Ron Wakkary and Will Odom, who were working in the Netherlands at the time, also had a wonderful time at the workshop. We highly recommend you participate in a workshop yourself if you are in the area.

Claudy often welcomes people to her farm to partake in the process of producing and using her dyes, felts, and other materials.

The museum and Hoge Veluwe park are accessible by free-to-use, white bicycles within the park. The natural vegetations and soils change as you ride: sometimes rolling sand dunes with open skies, and sometimes dots of moss and short yellow grass with impossibly green canopies of leaves above.
