WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP

with Andrea Ponsi

17 °C N 07 KM/H

We are always honoured to have a workshop with the Italian architect, author, and watercolour artist Andrea Ponsi, a great friend of the field schools.

Andrea Demonstrating in the villa

Andrea came from Florence to Rome to teach us the essentials of blocking in compositions for watercolour, his “analogical drawing” approach, how to use watercolour washes, and how to abstract a composition.

This was only possible because of his patience as a teacher, extraordinary skills, and visual mastery. We went through techniques, and methods of abstracting forms in our villa before venturing out into a drizzly city to sketch and paint.

It iss harder than you may think, but it challenged us to learn something new and uncomfortable, using our hands to connect each stroke to the intention of the mind and eye.

ABSTRACTING THE SKYLINE

In a park above the Campidoglio, we all did our best to capture the skyline; Andrea was finished a remarkable painting by the time most of us had only blocked in rough silhouettes. It was inspiring to see and hear how a great master works, and to learn his craft.
