ON NATURAL DYES

with RENS

21 °C W 12 KM/H

RENS (Stefanie van Keijsteren and Renee Mennen) is a research-based design studio. We interviewed the Eindhoven-based duo about the pieces born from their collaboration with Cor Unum for our film on ceramics.

Their deep process and research into sources of natural dyes fluidly evolved into new products for Cor Unum, starting with “Reddish”, to “Colour Traces”, to the most recent product, “Table Top”.

“Can porcelain colour itself? What does it take to revive a collection of carpets? How do different types of wood react to paint, and can one’s life cycle be visualized in tapestry?”

Endlessly fascinating to talk to, RENS is obsessed with pigments, hues, intensity, and saturation. The project always begins with a question, and the process of following where the question leads is often the outcome — it is not intended to culminate in a sellable product.
