The week in Rome is meant to shock the group out of any complacency that the comparably orderly and efficient cities of the Netherlands may lull the team into.
Juxtaposing these two countries creates a clearer sense of who the mostly Protestant, liberal, tolerant, and fluently English-speaking Dutch people are, and it instills a deeper appreciation for the easy comfort it allows.
The route this year took us from the relative calm of Amsterdam, to the chaotic and passionate Rome, and then to the rural north of the Netherlands with a 30 minute bike ride to the nearest grocery store in the small town of Leeuwarden — making for a trip of extremely contrasting scales.
